Wok and Barrel is situated in a quiet and interesting little neighborhood of Singapore called Duxton Hill. A restaurant with a cool name, great atmosphere and even better food. A perfect place to cool off with a nice drink and a good lunch on a hot afternoon.
The easiest way to get to Duxton hill is from the Chinatown stop on the purple SMRT line. It is a little south of Maxwell road around where the Buddha Tooth Relic temple is. The neighborhood has a lot of bars and restaurants amidst the buildings with the covered sidewalks.
Wok and Barrel
We first visited Wok and Barrel in January of 2012. It was a lucky find as we were looking up places for some good Nasi Lemak and saw this place come up in some review...we decided to go as we were nearby and really enjoyed it. We had the opportunity to visit Singapore again a few months later and we decided to go again...was pleasantly surprised to see the same waiter who immediately recognized me and welcomed me warmly back to Singapore. I am assuming that not too many guys like me with goatees go there and I am pretty recognizable but regardless it was nice gesture and I was happy about it and the quality of the service. Note we visited again on this trip to Singapore about which I am presently writing this review and did not see the same people but the quality of the service was superb regardless.
The restaurant has an inviting friendly atmosphere. The floor is bare concrete, not polished or tiled and the simple white walls have framed photographs from places and are for sale with prices displayed should someone want to buy. In fact I did see one of the patrons buy two of the photos on our trip there.
Nasi lemak and refreshing iced tea
The delicious banana coconutty
We always start the lunch with glasses of Iced Tea. Wok and Barrel serves really refreshing Iced Tea which isn't too sweet and always leaves me slightly wishing I had some more in my glass when I am done. Their Nasi Lemaks are excellent as well. We usually get that with a main dish like the 5 spice pork which goes very well with the Lemak. I used to get the beef rendang but my new favorite is probably the fried chicken. Tender and flavorful, I strongly suggest you try it at least once. For dessert...spoiled for choice but if I have to suggest something that will make most people very happy, I pick the "Banana Coconutty Bom", a delicious combination of warm banana cake and sauces with coconut ice cream. Blew me away.
Wok and Barrel is in short a great restaurant and one that I will certainly always include in my itinerary whenever I visit Singapore.
