I was in Vientiane for a short overnight trip before leaving Laos and had only briefly looked up places to eat in Vientiane and Amphone was one of those highly recommended restaurants for traditional Lao cuisine. With no specific plans to go there, I decided to go when I noticed it earlier heading back to my hotel, the Ansara. It is located on a narrow street intersecting Setthathirath road, which is the main artery just after the main waterfront promenade. Not sure if the street has a name, not one I can recall or find anyway. The street is next to a Joma cafe on Setthathirath Road, so if you see that, turn into the street next to it and you should be able to see the wooden Amphone sign prominently with a little sloping roof on top of the gate.
The Amphone Restaurant
Lao sticky rice and sausage
We went there for dinner after an evening walking up and down the promenade and night market before heading there. The Amphone restaurant has a little garden and courtyard area with some seating but they were not using it that evening. All the seating was in the fairly large dining area inside the restaurant building. The place very dimly lit and I would have preferred a slightly brighter atmosphere but still the ambiance was nice. Most of the diners were not Lao and were either tourists like us or maybe expats. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Some of the staff were not too proficient with English but were helpful nevertheless and called for assistance from others who could when they couldn't understand us. We went with a few traditional Lao dishes, a Lao sausage appetizer which looked as good as it tasted, sticky rice, larb and a couple of other dishes. Beer Lao to wash it down and a simple mango for dessert.
The food was delicious and spicy! Especially the larb which I wolfed down with gusto, peppers and all and endured a mild bit of indigestion the next morning but it still was worth it. So great choice it turned out to be and highly recommend it as a Lao cuisine option in Vientiane.
